Errata for the Draft EIS and Proposed Forest Plan
This page describes errors that have been identified in the Draft EIS, Proposed Forest Plan, Maps, and related documents.
Draft EIS
Page 27 of the Summary
Page 2-50 and 2-51 of the Draft EIS
The expert viability assessment summaries presented for Alternatives 3 and 4 on pages 2-50 and 2-51 of the
Draft EIS, and repeated on page 27 of the Summary are incorrect. The correct summaries are presented in Table
2-18 of the Draft EIS. The text for page 27 of the summary and pages 2-50 and 2-51 should read as follows:
Alternative 3: The likelihood of maintaining viable, well-distributed populations on the Tongass after 100 years is
estimated to be very high for the wolf; high for the goshawk, marten, and brown bear; and moderate to high for endemic
mammals.
Alternative 4: The likelihood of maintaining viable, well-distributed populations on the Tongass after 100 years
is estimated to be moderately high for the wolf and brown bear; moderate for the goshawk; and low to moderate for the
marten and endemic mammals.

A document production error resulted in an incorrect version of the figure presented on page 3-117
(Figure 3.9-5) being included in the Draft EIS. The correct version of the figure is as follows:
Figure 3.9-5.

Volume Strata Approach Used for the 1997 Forest Plan

Page 3-444:
An error was made in referencing work of the “Tongass Futures Roundtable Timber Committee.”
Table 3.22-17 cited draft material produced by a group that was looking at mill capacity and not market demand.
The draft material was incomplete and does not represent the opinion of the committee, the Roundtable, or its
members. All references to the Roundtable should be removed from the EIS and will not appear in the final EIS.
This includes deletion of the reference from page 6-20 in the References chapter. The source for Table 3.22-17
should say “Source: Estimates developed by the Forest Service based on McDowell Group et al (2004), Brackley et
al. (2006b), and the Juneau Economic Development Council (2006) with updates by Southeast Alaska sawmills.”
Forest Plan
Pages 3-19 and 3-21:
As noted on these pages, group size is limited to no more than 12 persons for commercial or general public use
of a wilderness unless otherwise approved. One exception is identified as authorized in the Forest Plan: the Stikine
River valley and tidal estuary below 100’ elevation, not including Shakes valley upstream from the outlet of Shakes Lake.
However, this exception only applies to general public use. The proposed Forest Plan incorrectly states that this
exception applies to commercial use. This is not the case. Commercial group size is limited to no more than 12 persons
in this area.
